I joined Amnesty International at the age of 15. Since then I have worked as an activist, lawyer, expert and trainer in various positions and places. So it is safe to say that I have a profound and lasting expertise and passion for fundamental and human rights.
Over the years I have become more and more aware that my love for nature and all living creatures equals my dedication to human rights. However, although we, humans, drafted many conventions, laws and other legally binding instruments on human rights we have not such a powerful structure when it comes to the rights of nature. Nature cannot defend itself in our society. It has a voice, which we only hear when it sounds harsh, as it does in natural disasters, occuring in respons to our destruction of the natural balance.
I strongly believe that we have to give nature a voice and make that voice heard in our human society, by adopting binding laws which will protect and restore nature and natural balance.
The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (the “Alliance”) is a network of organizations and individuals committed to the universal adoption and implementation of legal systems that recognize, respect and enforce “Rights of Nature” and to making the idea of Rights of Nature an idea whose time has come. I subscribe to the founding principles of the alliance and to the actions they undertake.
The Alliance is the founder of the International Rights of Nature Tribunal. They found that “The current ecological crisis requires that we transform our international and domestic legal systems to nurture, rather than allow the destruction of the Earth community.”
On 4 and 5 December 2015 the founding meeting of the Rights in Nature International Tribunal took place in Paris, in conjunction with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Tribunal is part of a worldwide movement, aiming to give nature and living creatures a voice. The Tribunal can investigate, hear and decide cases involving alleged violations of the Earth Rights Declaration. I truly hope that the Tribunal will inspire all those who care for and fight for human and natures rights all over the world to undertake action and duplicate the Alliance’s efforts on the national level.
